Aschaffenburg, whose history dates back to over one thousand years, is a town of distinctive charm. Two of the most fascinating buildings in Aschaffenburg are the Stiftskirche, dating back to the 10th century and the unique Pompejanum. Today it houses major exhibits of Bavarian antiques The Archbishop and Elector Johann Schweickard von Kronberg bequeathed Aschaffenburg one of the mostimportant Ranaissance castles in the western world.The Aschaffenburg Staatsgalerie in the Schloss Johannisburg exhibits, outside the capital of the county, the most important Bavarian national art collection.The venerable Church of St. Peter and Alexander, oncethe symbol of religious power, is a reminder of the fact that it was part of the territory of the Diocese and later Electorate of Mainz until 1803.
